Is it licensed here?
Not with a license. Virginia's Consumer Protection Act bars selling residential mold remediation services without a mold remediation certification from a nationally or internationally recognized certifying body. Ask which mold remediation certification the company is relying on, who holds it and whether that person will run or supervise your job, then look it up on the issuing body's public register.
Whatever the state requires, a mold-specific certification from an industry body is worth asking for. Examples include the IICRC's course-based Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT) and its experience-based Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS), and the ACAC's Council-certified Microbial Remediator (CMR). Each requires an exam, and each can be checked with the body that issued it. These are held by individuals, not companies, so ask who on your job holds one.
Insurance is the other half. Ask for a certificate of insurance that names general liability coverage, and call the carrier on the certificate to confirm it is current. Then get the job in writing before anyone starts: what will be contained, what will be cleaned or removed, who will fix the moisture source, and how the finished work will be checked and documented.

Every listing here is identity-checked, and we show IICRC certifications and insurance only where a company has supplied them for verification, so you can see what has actually been checked before you call.

We don't have a figure specific to Virginia. This is the national range. A single contained problem, like one wall or a bathroom ceiling, often comes in under it; whole-basement or post-flood work runs over it. If you get an independent assessment before the work, which we recommend, it is priced separately from the remediation, and so is an independent check after it where the job calls for one. Both should be.

What comes back: the remediation range with its source, the assessor's visit and a clearance test, which not every job needs, as their own lines, and a total.
