Is it licensed here?
Is mold remediation licensed in California?
No. California does not license mold remediation companies and has no state certification program for them. Some companies will show a general contractor or home improvement registration instead. That is worth having, but it is a consumer protection basic, not a mold credential.
That leaves the checking to you. The closest thing to a standard is a mold-specific certification from an industry body: the IICRC's Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT) and the ACAC's Council-certified Microbial Remediator (CMR) both require training and an exam, and both can be looked up on the issuing body's public register.
Insurance is the other half. Ask for a certificate of insurance that names general liability coverage, and call the carrier on the certificate to confirm it is current. Then get the job in writing before anyone starts: what will be contained, what will be removed, how the moisture source will be fixed, and who will check the result.
Consumer Warning
California does not require a state license for mold remediation. This makes verification critical. Anyone can buy a truck and call themselves a "Mold Expert." Every listing here is identity-checked, and we show IICRC certifications and insurance only where a company has supplied them for verification, so you can see what has actually been checked before you call.
What to ask a mold company for in California
- A mold-specific certification you can look up (IICRC AMRT or ACAC CMR), not just a general contractor registration
- A certificate of insurance showing general liability, confirmed with the carrier
- A written scope: containment, what gets removed, and how the moisture source is fixed
- Post-remediation verification by someone other than the company that did the work
- Recent reviews under the same business name and address that appear on the quote

The middle half of California projects in our cost model fall in this range. A single contained problem, like one wall or a bathroom ceiling, usually comes in under it; whole-basement or post-flood work runs over it. Testing before and after is quoted separately, and should be.
